The Road to a Picture-Perfect Lawn: My Spring Strategy

Over the past few years, I have been taking a granular / spray hybrid approach to my lawn care regimen, and it’s been doing ok. My yard hasn’t exactly looked the best on the block, but it’s been growing in nice and thick. I want to try and level up my game this year.

Spoon feeding is the plan this year. Small doses every 2 weeks instead of a lot every 5 weeks.

I am planning on using all liquid applications this year so I can have more control with where and how much is put down to prevent burning and making sure its not wasted on the sidewalk or runs away after a bad storm. Just enough every 2 weeks, and it should see a noticeable benefit this year.

The plan is simple. Split app of Prodiamine in the spring with nitrogen and liquid iron. This will be followed by the start of my every other week apps of fertilizer, liquid iron, seaweed, and humic acid. I may move to weekly but I will see how the lawn reacts to every 2 weeks to start.

This is what I am working with right now, just out of winter.

Every 2 weeks, I will be putting down the following in my backpack sprayer:

2oz / 1000 sqft Simple Lawn Solutions Liquid Iron

8oz / 1000 sqft EqualizORR 18-18-18 Fertilizer

3oz / 1000 sqft Simple Lawn Solutions Soil Hume

That’s it. It’s pretty simple to follow. Last years soil test showed me that I am low on a lot of micro and macros, so after this year, I plan to get a soil test and see what we may want to do next year.

I put down my first application of Prodiamine along with some iron and a shot of liquid nitrogen. Here are my rates if that’s your thing.

Prodiamine @ 0.184oz per 1000 sqft

Iron @ 2oz per 1000sqft

Nitrogen 28-0-0 @ 3.2oz per 1000 sqft

This app is just to wake up the lawn and give it a snack and prevent future weeds from germinating. Hoping for a nice green up.

The next split app of Prodiamine won’t be for another several weeks.

Hopefully, I will have some progress pics next week when I go to  spray the first app of the triple 18 fert. Who knows? I may need to do my first mow of the season.
