We have been using FreeNAS for some time now. FreeNAS recently switched to a new revision and new name, TrueNAS. Well this latest update broke everything I had set up.
It wouldn’t be so bad to just relearn user permissions and set up but this was like the 3rd time this has happened so its time to jump ship.
I opted to switch to something else entirely, Synology DS1821+.
I will reuse the old equipment for a steam server, but for now it will just be sitting idle in the basement rack I built. Which needs to be finished! I’ll make a post on that later.
I will be reusing the WD Red 3TB drives that are in my current disk shelf and populating them into the Synology. So this means moving all of the data off the current NAS and onto external drives for temp storage.
Given its smaller size, and that its not rack mountable, I will be placing it on a shelf on my wall rack.
The goal is to store our family data (documents, photos, etc) and have it run our plex server (for now). I basically just want this to ultimately just be a NAS and nothing more.
I may also set up a lancache which should help with windows updates and steam game downloads. Since the household has multiple PC’s it should help out.
I have software to install, Adguard, Lancache, Plex, and I also need to set up data syncing from our mobile devices as well as pc backup software. So keep an eye out for that. Thanks for stopping by!
