Yesterday we found out that our very active pair of gold and green severums have deposited a fresh batch of eggs on a small hideaway rock we placed in the large 300 gallon aquarium.
I decided that we should try and keep this batch since every time we find eggs, they get eaten a few days later. It just disturbs the whole tank as they guard roughly 1/3 of the tank and openly defend the space. Things become peaceful if we remove the eggs almost immediately.
I placed the eggs in the 10 gallon tank we have set up to hatch newly laid eggs. Typically I will grow them out in this tank until they are fairly large and eating flake foods.

I set the tank up using water from the large aquarium and set the heater to 80°F to see if this helps ensure more eggs hatch. Last time I had the water set to mid 70’s and I found that the eggs didn’t survive as well.
Here is the tank set up. I have a sponge filter running off the air pump that the 40 gallon and two 20 gallon tanks are using. Heater is set to 80°F.
We’ll see how this works out in the next few days. Once they hatch I will then need to raise brine shrimp to feed them. I will start that process when I see free swimming fish.
