Upgrading NAS Memory to 32GB for Improved Performance

Since I last wrote about the NAS, we have incorporated it into our daily use in the house. From photo backups daily, to streaming our Blu-ray and DVD backups over plex, it’s time to give it a bit more memory to work with.

The plan is simple. I plan to upgrade the NAS to 32GB which is the suggested max amount.

I went with crucial memory for this upgrade. Specifically, 2 x Micron 16GB DDR4-3200 ECC SODIMM 1Rx8 CL22 sticks for a total of 32GB.

The install should be straight forward. Simply shutdown the NAS and open the panel on the side and swap out the single 4GB stick for these 2 16GB sticks. Replace the panel and turn it on.

The way the system is running now, we are basically running low on memory. Sometimes it hits 80% which slows down all sorts of processes that are running on the system.

We’ll see if this upgrade fixes any of the slowness we have experienced with serving up large amounts of files as well as any slowness with the apps that run on this machine as well.
